Oddly enough the SCO Grand Chief is back at work

Count me shocked that Southern Chiefs Organization Grand Chief Jerry Daniels is back at work again.
For those who might not recall or didn’t catch that bit of news in early December, Daniels was allegedly assaulted outside a notorious Ottawa strip club The Bare Fax. He was in Ottawa attending the Assembly of First Nations gathering.
What happened to the threat of pulling out of SCO by the summit of chiefs representing eight First Nations with the Southeast Resource Development Council? Did that meeting happen?
Once again, this extended clown show, as I have come to call this entire episode, continues with no regard for transparency and accountability to First Nations people at large.

My name is Gloria D. Sinclair. I am an on-reserve member of the Peguis First Nation and I carry Peguis indigeneity with pride, along with the belief and responsibility of a matriarch that we must speak with truth and respect. That we acknowledge, network, and share our resources in an equitable manner to promote and grow our community for both current and future generations. I have more than 30 years of experience teaching, facilitating, and training in the area of capacity building across Manitoba. I am honored to be an internationally recognized Canadian trained Reading Recovery Teacher Leader (Emerita), and literacy project writer for several projects, and I am one of the initial contract writers in the conception of the Manitoba First Nations Education Resource Centre (MFNERC).
A few points I would like to highlight are as follows;
The goal of the Peguis Surrender Claim Trust (PSCT) states it is to help improve the quality of life for our community members both on and off-reserve by making strategic investments & support the social and economic development of our community. I strongly feel the priority is to support the beneficiaries to build capacity, promote business/projects; and community projects that result in addressing the direct needs of our people, both on and off-reserve in a fair, balanced, and equitable manner. While it is of utmost importance to review and report to the community on project expenditures, I also believe it is important to monitor, assess, and track the effectiveness of ‘funding allocation’, whether it’s to ‘already funded organizations’ or to ‘individual beneficiaries. to ensure our goals are being met in the most effective way for beneficiaries, already funded organizations applying for more funding needs to be carefully weighed. The other point I would like to address is the Terms of Trustees, which are the length of service arranged for the position of Trustees (which is a life tenure). To maintain the effort and goal of building capacity, the Board terms/criteria and length of terms should be reviewed to; provide opportunity to cycle in new trustees and to provide opportunity for others and thereby build community capacity, and equally important, to ensure there is a clear, transparent role of Trustee replacement should the need arise. I believe this is a more realistic approach to better reflect the ever-changing needs of community and thereby serving our community without any undue hindrances. Finally, I also believe that PSCT (Peguis Surrender Claim Trust) should not infringe upon proprietary rights of beneficiaries that apply for funding (no PSCT name on it, then no funding). If a beneficiary writes a book, invents or creates a product or creates personally designed products, putting the name of PSCT name on it should not be contingent upon funding approval. I am running for the on-reserve trustee for Peguis Surrender Claim Trust and believe these are important issues to bring forward. I encourage you to exercise your right to vote and I wish the other candidates well. Miigwetch/Ekosani, Gloria D. Sinclair

Netley Creek settlement: an outstanding question of reserve and band status

Netley Creek Reserve was an established First Nation before the signing of Treaty 1. Treaty 1 was signed on Aug. 3, 1871 at lower Fort Garry.
In fact, my ancestor KAYA-JIESKEBINOA, or L’homme Noir, as the French traders called him, was the leader of that community who participated in the negoti-ations and agreed to the Selkirk Treaty.
I am just giving the reader a quick update on information that I found while working as the Manitoba Museum Writer-in-residence for two years with the bulk of the research done by Manitoba Museum researcher Anne Lindsay. Anything I write about here is properly annotated and backed up. And will be included in a book that I am writing.

Survivors of Mackay Indian Residential School carry on healing journey and catch up

BY JAMES WASTASECOOT
Former students of Mackay School in Dauphin, Manitoba came together Aug 30 – Sept 1, 2024 to catch up, remember and share their experiences as well as to chart future endeavours. “The gatherings help us to deal with issues in our lives and being together helps us to discuss how we were affected by the residential school system,” said Alice Bear who works with Peguis Child and Family. “ It is a start to understanding our-selves.”
This year’s gathering was smaller than previous years. Thirty four turned out to the venue at the Dauphin Friendship Centre, the actual Mackay School site not being avail-able. “But it doesn’t diminish the importance of these meetings,” said Bear, who is also a board member of the Mackay Residential School Gathering Inc., the charity which the former students began in 2010. “It’s important that we continue to make progress and we reach out to other groups in the future.”
