Peguis Central School Update: School Administration resignations accepted by council at a duly convened meeting

By James Wastasecoot

September 14, 2023 – Events at the Peguis Central School continue to evolve as the council deals with the fallout of a code red incident which occurred on the second day of school, Aug. 29 and a parent meeting Aug. 30. At a Peguis council meeting today at the Peguis community hall, the resignations of School principal Scott Powers and vice-principal Mian Irfan, (4-8) were formally accepted. This occurred following a meeting of Peguis Central School admin staff, teachers and School- Community Liaison Cindy Spence in which some staff expressed negative feedback over school management, according to sources who were present. Betty Anne McIvor, interim superintendent of education, is also leaving. The council is in the process of announcing a new school board which parents at the meeting suggested should be involved in the hiring of the positions. The superintendent position is currently posted with a deadline of Sept. 22. It is expected that the superintendent position will be filled by the end of the month. The positions for principal and vice-principal will be posted for competition. An interim school principal has not been named.

The council meeting was open to the public, with chairs for 100 laid out in a circle, the council table in the centre. Only 29 band members attended. Notice of the meeting was not posted on the Peguis First Nation website or on social media.
